Once the borders were peaceful the castle became a domestic residence and the mansion was built.
During the 19th century Hay Castle was home to vicar William Latham Bevan and his family. Francis Kilvert was a frequent visitor.
Hay Castle became the home Lady Glanusk in the early 20th century and the diaries of Bramwell Bradley tell the tales of this era.
In the 1960s Richard Booth bought Hay Castle and begun to establish Hay as a Book Town. He declared himself king in 1977.
Hay Castle Trust was established in 2011 and begun the restoration with contractors starting in 2018. The Castle opened to the public in 2022.
